Why mentoring? by SG Psych Stuff Mentor

Many people have been saying about how important it is to get a mentor for your career or even for studies (So have we!). But why? What can mentors do that could help you to excel in your life? And how do we even find a mentor?

Well, that goes back to networking or how active you are in attending different events. Mentors can appear in our daily life at any point in time. However, it is up to us how we can identify them. Many mentees have a lot of things in their minds but they need to learn how to prioritize things and set up a goal for themselves as to what do they want to achieve first.

We may all be capable of learning and taking in new information very well. But a mentor is someone who can show you a new way of thinking or learning, but not hand-holding you through the process. For instance, a mentor can help to lay out all your concerns and discuss with you on issues of your priorities, your time management, your organization skill and others. Mentors usually tend to focus on your strengths and provide positive impact in your lives.

There is a saying:
"If you do what you've always done, you will get what you've always got.''
So why not a new perspective for a change?
Questions that may help you during thinking process:
"What can you change about yourself?"
"What can you change about the situation?"
Which is harder? Changing the situation or changing yourself? For me, I vote for the change of situation. There are always a lot of challenges come upon us everyday and every stage of our lives. If we do not do something about ourselves or our minds, these challenges will always tend to be a stumbling block for our next move in our careers, studies or lives.

And what is one of the most essential things we need to have to face the stumbling block in our lives?
Resilience!
Learning to be resilient in dealing with difficult situations and challenges in our lives can open up more opportunities for us. Mentors can be there to provide various support to the mentees. However, mentees need to be very disciplined and active in following direction set and being able to talk about the problems faced with the mentors. Being on the same page with mentors is always vital in a successful mentoring programme. If a mentor is not very encouraging or a mentee who is not ready to provide his/ her best to receive the support, then it is challenging for the mentoring process to be smooth sailing.

There shouldn't be any misconception in mentees expecting mentors to break down his/ her problem and use a series of psychological tricks to solve them. Having a mentor is to be accept or be exposed to a new perspective in different situations. Last but not least, have faith in yourself and your ability!!!
